This illumination represents one of the earliest known examples of the ‘temptation scene’ iconography in Northern European manuscripts. The demon is depicted with characteristic features of the Romanesque demonic tradition: compound eyes suggesting insect-like qualities, vestigial wings that appear membranous rather than feathered, and an exaggerated musculature that emphasizes physical threat. The positioning of the figure follows the diagonal composition common to Bohemian scriptoria of the period, creating dynamic tension across the folio. Notable is the use of vermillion for the creature’s flesh tones, a choice that would become standard in later Germanic traditions but was innovative for its time. The iconographic program here draws upon earlier Byzantine traditions while incorporating local folkloric elements. The three-clawed hands are particularly significant, appearing in contemporary accounts of demonic visitation documented in monastic chronicles of the region.
